Node sync

He generates an image, moves a node, rewrites one line of a prompt, and your side changes right away — no refresh, and no such thing as his version and your version. This section is about what the result is when two people touch the same thing at once in DOTV: both editing the same node, the full-screen editors as the exception, undo and getting things back, and what happens after a disconnect.

Both editing the same node

Merging happens per field, not by overwriting the node as a whole:

  • You are rewriting this node's prompt while he drags it somewhere else — both land, and neither of you wipes out the other.
  • You both edit the same field (both writing the prompt) — whoever hits it last wins, and the earlier line is replaced.
The Editing badgeChen Mo has this node's shot sheet open. The full-screen editor overwrites the whole thing when it saves, so whoever is inside gets flagged — go in as well and you get a heads-up first (it will not stop you).
Chen Mo has this node's shot sheet open, so there is a tag hanging over him.

So when you really do have to work on the same node together, splitting it out loud is enough: one of you takes the description, the other takes position and edges, and you stay out of each other's way.

The full-screen editors are the exception

The video editor, the shot sheet and the previz stage are opened full screen and saved as a whole: each starts from the content as it stood the moment you opened it, and writes the entire document back when you save. Two people open the same one, and whoever saves last overwrites everything the first one saved.

The product does not stop you, but it does let you see it coming:

  • While someone else has it open, that node carries a X is editing tag.
  • Go in anyway and you get a warning first (and then it lets you in — maybe you only wanted a look).

Undo and getting things back

  • Undo (⌘Z) undoes your own last step and does not roll back what other people did in the meantime.
  • A node he deletes disappears on your side too, and ⌘Z on your side will not bring it back (that undoes your own last step) — check before you delete, because this step is everyone's.

After a disconnect

Reconnecting settles the accounts on its own: whatever others changed while you were away is filled in, and what you changed while offline still counts as yours. Not sure the copy in front of you is right? Refresh — what a refresh shows you is always the copy on the server.
