The model library

Primitives are enough to block out volume, but some scenes need the thing to really look like itself: a folding chair, a vending machine, a lamp post. The model library in DOTV's Previz is where those come into the scene — the cube icon on the toolbar — and your own models can be imported too. This section covers what is in the library and how to import.

What is in the library

Five categoriesThe first four are built-in assets (empty for now — the library isn't loaded yet); the last, My models, is whatever you've imported, and it's where you land by default.

Five categories, opening on My models.

The first four (Convenience / Home / Outdoor / Tools) are slots for built-in assets — they are empty right now, and opening one only shows a line of text. So the one category that is actually usable today is the last: My models, the ones you imported yourself.

Import your own model

Import from your computerThe first card is the way in, and it takes FBX and OBJ. An imported model drops straight into the scene and is saved under My models — so another canvas, or another machine, can use it again.
The first card is the way in.

FBX and OBJ are supported. Once you pick a file:

  1. It is uploaded to the cloud and recorded under My models.
  2. It is placed in the scene right away, ready to drag, rotate and scale.
  3. Open another canvas or another machine next time and it is still in the list — import once, use it whenever.

Models exported from different software vary wildly in size (some in meters, some in centimeters, and the origin can sit at waist height). On the way into the scene they are all normalized: scaled by their longest side to about two meters, sitting on the ground and centered horizontally. So you never get a cup bigger than the whole scene; resize it as you need once it is in.

Delete at the top right of a card only removes that row from the library; anything already placed in a scene is unaffected (it holds the file address).

When a model will not load (a broken file, a dead address), its spot in the scene shows a wireframe box: you can at least still tell that something is there and where it is, instead of the whole view falling apart.
